"Meditation Within"
With a Native American as my guide in Monument Valley, I was shown a cave with a natural hole carved out. I found the hole interesting, but I chose to continue on and not take the time to shoot it. That afternoon I found the location with the tree in the foreground and the valley in the background and I knew I wanted to shoot the scene. When examining all angles of the scene, it occurred to me that the branches of the tree reminded me of the dark, painted-like impressions by the cave's hole. Excited by the thought of trying something new, I went back to the cave and in the late afternoon light, shot a full frame of the cave and the hole. On my viewfinder I marked with a grease pencil where I placed the hole. The next afternoon I went back to the scene with the tree and realized I could put the two scenes together, I shot the scene so that I could capture the depth of Monument Valley within the cave and make it feel as if the tree is trying to grow out of the cave and into the white light of day.
