"Lone Birch,
North Woodstock, New Hampshire"
The first time I saw this grouping of trees was in the summer in North Woodstock, NH. It was a bright day and the greens of the leaves were sparkling in the sun. The forest seemed like it could go on forever. I was struck by how one of the birches seemed to stand out from the rest and it made me take note and go back the following day. I arrived around ten the next morning since, in my mind, I was going to shoot something similar to what I had seen the day before. As I studied the scene closer, I realized that I wanted to do something completely different from what my first instincts were. By late afternoon the sun was just right. I buried the forest and brought out the birch by utilizing all the opportunities the black and white medium affords us.
