"Dreamin' Arizona"
Fascinated by the form of the saguaro, I knew I wanted to capture this magnificent specimen. Arizona sunsets can be gorgeous, but I knew I didn't want just a pretty picture of a saguaro silhouetted in the sunset. While exploring the desert between Phoenix and Tucson, I found this saguaro and felt that if the sunset was right it could be the foreground for a photographic montage. I shot the saguaro and made notes on where all the right elements were placed in the frame. The dreamlike sequence above the saguaro was caught the following day, when a streak of light was in the sky and the rest of the desert was in an eerie type of light. When I placed these two original transparencies together it was exactly the feel I was looking for... a composite feeling, visually and spiritually, of what Arizona means to me.
